Manuscripts

A comprehensive catalogue of Guidobaldo del Monte’s manuscripts is still unavailable. Within the framework of the European Cultural Heritage Online (ECHO) project, the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (Berlin), in collaboration with the Biblioteca Oliveriana of Pesaro, launched a campaign for the digitization of the manuscripts of Guidobaldo del Monte that are kept at the Biblioteca Oliveriana. The digitization was kindly carried out by Martin Frank and these writings are now available on the ECHO website (http://echo.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de) under the heading Guidobaldo del Monte Archival Collection of the Biblioteca Oliveriana. A copy of Giovanni Battista Benedetti’s Diversarum speculationum mathematicarum, et physicarum liber (1585), which includes handwritten margin notes by Guidobaldo del Monte, can also be found on the ECHO website. Jürgen Renn and Peter Damerow recently published a book in which they discuss these notes: The Equilibrium Controversy. Guidobaldo del Monte’s Critical Notes on the Mechanics of Jordanus and Benedetti and their Historical and Conceptual Background (Edition Open Access 2012). Numerous letters, either written by Guidobaldo del Monte or addressed to him, have been transcribed and edited by Enrico Gamba on the basis of both published and unpublished sources. These are available online under Biblioteca e Archivio Digitale del Centro Internazionale di Studi Urbino e la Prospettiva (http://urbinoelaprospettiva.uniurb.it). The manuscript Meditatiunculae Guidi Ubaldi ex Marchionibus Montis Sanctae Mariae De Rebus Mathematicis, kept at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (Paris, Ms Lat. 10246), has been digitized and can be found on the library website (Gallica section: http://gallica.bnf.fr). The transcription of the Meditatiunculae is available on the ECHO website, together with Roberta Tassora’s doctoral thesis entitled Le Meditatiunculae de rebus mathematicis di Guidobaldo del Monte (University of Bari, 2001). Another manuscript by Federico Commandino and Guidobaldo del Monte, which was described by Pamela Neville (Neville 1986) and is currently not available in digital format online, can be found in Los Angeles at the Bound Manuscripts Collection (Collection number 170/624), Department of Special Collections, Charles E. Young Research Library, University of California. Other important manuscripts are kept at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana of Milan and the Biblioteca Comunale of Treviso.
